Why backing up in the cloud? PDF Print E-mail

Some people may have concerns, and even legitimate one as it goes about providing third-parties with personal information such as family pictures, resume,…etc but you have to admit that the cloud has open up some opportunities that our grand-parents wouldnt even have anticipated.

While paper would turn into dust as fire strikes, all your digital assets can be preserved almost forever (I know, bankruptcy may be even worth than fire in that case) when backed-up in the cloud.

Having looked at various on-line storage solutions, I have chosen to go for an Amazon S3 storage jointly with the Jungle disk software that maps my on-line storage as a local disk drive. Not only is Amazon S3 cheap, but it provides also some protection mechanism and a (relative) assurance of service continuation as it is hosted on the same companys servers. Of course, Amazon doesnt aggressively promote the products to the individual but reserves it more to tech-savy companies for the storage of their file, but Jungle disk does a great job in hiding what happens behind the scene.

If you feel less adventurous you may look at solutions such as Carbonite, Dropbox, or box.net.

One more thing worth mentioning is that my NAS, a QNAP TS-117, supports Amazon S3 as an extension of its own storage, one more reason for me to select Amazon S3 over the competition.
