10 steps to boost your netbook |
|
|
|
|
Netbooks are great but often lack power when it comes to computation-intensive applications. The following 10 steps will squeeze the latest drop from your netbook to your biggest satisfaction.
The explanations relate to the MSI Wind U100 but may be applied to most of the ATOM-based netbooks.
Before doing any of the following, make sure you have got a backup of your system and a brother in-law who knows how to fix broken PCs . As usual don't take any risk unless you understand what you are doing.

I have just discovered thanks to the excellent site Lifehacker that some kind of Chrome OS sneak preview had been released.
It runs from a thumb drive and gets installed in minutes.

One month with the MSI Wind |
|
|
|

It has been one month since I have purchased this little jewel, and still am I amazed by the power of such a small device.
I now run most of my regular applications (and I have got a lot), and don't experience any instability, or slow down. As previously posted, I am running Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 voice recognition software and cannot complain about both the speed and accuracy. Recently I have even watched a DVD and could not believe how sharp and smooth was the image.
Any downsides? Well here are the few down sides I can report on, but believe me the up sides compensates from far these little things:

You may wonder if an MSI Wind can run DNS? Well the answer is YES it can.
During the installation, the voice commands for the office applications have been disabled and the recognition mode has been automatically configured for speed rather than accuracy.
Despite these small limitation (and nothing prevent you to force these options), DNS 10 is fully functional and doesn't suffer nor from a slow processing nor from a lack of accuracy.
Having a little bit of french accent (far from the inspector Clouseau), the only errors made by the system were due to a wrong pronunciation and have been quickly corrected by putting some more zeal in my dictation.
So, yes definitively a 1,6 GHz Atom processor is sufficient for voice recognition.
Needless to say that DNS does not face any serious competition and is the best product of its class.
For those of you using the version 9, no worry it also works. The only subjective impression is about recognition speed though; I will try to operate some objective measurements to share with you.
Have fun! |

It seems that I like duing stupid things. Today I have decided to void my MSI Wind warranty...how did you that? Pretty easy I have upgraded it...how sorry you said Why? Well just curious on how fast it can run when the memory is brought to 2Gb and the disk is swapped with a 320 Gb Western Digital Scorpio Black 7200 RPM and 16 Mb cache disk.
How that do that, well I have just looked at this video and made it step by step...but hold on DO NOT FORGET: doing so you not only void your warranty but can cause permanent damages to your PC, so you have been warned.
Three more things:
